This piece portrays 3 King George Whiting fish swimming across a wave. King George Whiting are a common fish found in the South West region of Western Australia. As artists, we love to take inspiration from our local region, and make artwork that is reflective of our surrounding environment.
The King George Whiting are made from reclaimed Marine Grade Stainless Steel, and have been hand cut with a Plasma Cutter. We then use an angle grinder to add the line work, and the TIG welder to add the spots. The colouring of the fish is achieved through heating the stainless steel. The fish are then attached to a timber backing board, which we shaped on the lathe to achieve the ‘wave’ effect. The timber used for the backing board is Camphor Laurel.
This artwork can be hung using a simple hook. The scale of the artwork is approximately 65cm wide, 13cm long and 8cm depth.
‘School of Fish’ can be displayed in a variety of settings, including outdoor spaces provided it is protected from the direct weather (an undercover patio space would be perfect).
